Background and Martial Arts Journey of Scott, Dojo-Cho of Iwama Ninpo Dojo

Scott at Iwama Ninpo Dojo

Scott, Dojo-Cho of Iwama Ninpo Dojo, is a dedicated practitioner of Ninpo Taijutsu and a Ni Dan (2nd degree black belt) at Kogen Ninpo Dojo. Located in Federal Way, Washington, Iwama Ninpo Dojo operates under the guidance of Sensei Tracy D. Corder, Kancho of Kogen Ninpo Dojo. Scott shares his experience and knowledge of Ninpo Taijutsu with students who seek traditional martial arts training in the Pacific Northwest.

Early Beginnings

Scott’s journey in martial arts began in 1996, shortly after completing his service in the United States Marine Corps. He found a dojo in Burien, Washington, where instruction was offered in both Ninjutsu and Muay Thai. Scott recognized early on that these two disciplines complemented each other well, and this realization led him to enroll in both courses. While the focus at the dojo was on preparing fighters for tournaments, Scott’s motivations differed. He was not interested in pursuing trophies, belts, or monetary rewards. Instead, he trained because he truly enjoyed the practice and valued the personal growth that came from regular participation in the classes.

Exploring New Styles

In 1997, Scott’s curiosity led him to try Aam ka Jutsu. Although his experience with this style was brief, he continued searching for a martial art that felt like the right fit for him. This exploration was an important part of his journey, as it exposed him to a variety of techniques and philosophies, helping him refine his own approach to martial arts.

Discovering Kogen Ninpo Dojo

A significant turning point in Scott’s martial arts journey came after a family trip to Japan in 2008. Upon returning home, he visited a martial arts supply store in Federal Way, Washington. There, he noticed a binder on the counter filled with flyers from local dojos. As he flipped through the pages, one flyer caught his eye: Kogen Ninpo Dojo. The word “NINJA” stood out to him, rekindling memories of the enjoyment he had experienced in his early training back in 1996. Inspired, he reached out to Sensei Corder, which marked a new chapter in his martial arts path.

Joining Ninpo Taijutsu

In December 2008, Scott attended a complimentary class at Kogen Ninpo Dojo. The experience was positive, and he asked Sensei Corder for permission to enroll as a student of Ninpo Taijutsu. Since then, except for the periods when he was recovering from two surgeries, he has been dedicated to studying under Sensei Corder’s guidance.

Current Role and Rank

Scott currently holds the rank of Ni Dan, the 2nd degree black belt at Kogen Ninpo Dojo. He continues to train diligently under the guidance of Sensei Corder, striving to deepen his understanding and proficiency in Ninpo Taijutsu. At present, he is working towards achieving the rank of San Dan, or 3rd degree black belt. This advancement involves progressing through the 2nd Kuden levels in BO, JO, and HANBO, further expanding his skills in these weapon arts.

In addition to his personal training and growth, Scott has the privilege of sharing his experience and knowledge of Ninpo Taijutsu with others. He does so by operating under the name Iwama Ninpo Dojo, where he serves as Dojo-Cho, overseeing instruction and supporting the development of fellow practitioners.

Philosophy and Teaching Approach

Scott’s approach to martial arts centers on the conviction that everyone who steps into the dojo is both a student and a teacher. He firmly believes that there is always something to learn from those around us, regardless of their experience level, and likewise, there are continual opportunities to share our own insights and experiences with others.

From the outset, Scott holds that respect should be offered to everyone. Respect is not a reward that must be earned over time, but rather, it should be present from the very first interaction. However, the real challenge lies in sustaining that respect. Maintaining it requires consistent actions, unwavering dedication, and a true commitment to the practice of martial arts. Through this mindset, the dojo becomes a place of mutual growth and support, fostering an environment where all practitioners can develop together.
